The most commonly used plastics for disposable tableware are polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS). However, growing environmental concerns related to the production and disposal of single-use packaging have led manufacturers to explore Bio-based Food Packaging, which refers to biodegradable products derived from renewable sources. Depending on their source, these can be polymers derived directly from plant/animal sources (e.g., starch or chitin) or indirectly from natural monomers through synthesis (e.g., polylactic acid or PLA).
